Years ago, there came a moment when I had to quit watching my favorite basketball
team. I was getting so angry when they did not perform well that I was losing control of
my emotions. Imagine that, getting angry over something that I had no control over. As
I have gotten older, I have found that there are a lot of things that I cannot control. While
this is a good and healthy revelation, the fact is that little things that were out of my
control still tended to make me very emotional. Most of the time that emotion was
anger.
Did you know that we can grow so accustomed to being angry that it actually feels
normal and safe to be angry? Not healthy mind you, but normal. Anger when left
unresolved eats away at our lives and our relationships. It is a cancer that we often
don’t manage very well if at all.
Anger can be the result of deep wounds and for those we need to work it out with
professional help. For most, it is those little things that we cannot control. Anger is a
thief and will steal your joy every chance it gets. However, once we remember that we
belong to Christ and His Kingdom, then we begin to gain a bit of perspective. My team
lost, I was treated unfairly, my taxes went up, and so on. So, what do I do? As a
Christian we are called to cast all of our cares upon Jesus. That does not mean that we
cannot be upset, but we are instead taking positive action rather than resorting to anger
and rage. We are allowing God to remind us that there are more important things in our
lives, as well as reminding us that He cares for us.
Next time you struggle with an anger moment, take a deep breath and look to God.
Most things look very different in the light of His presence.
