What is Easter?
If you are reading this, you are probably wondering why I am asking such a ridiculous
question. This past week one of our new attenders asked me why we were giving out
palm branches. He is new to Christianity and had never experienced Palm Sunday. I
became immediately aware that I was once again guilty of Christian assumption.
We live in a very post-Christian time. We need to be fully aware that our traditions do
not translate to everyone in our circles anymore. The good news is that this gives us
the opportunity to revisit our traditions, especially during Holy Week, and retell the story!
It is reckless and a disservice to believe that everyone knows the story of resurrection.
Even if they know of it, they may certainly not know the significance of this greatest of
historical moments.
It is a great time to be a loving witness and share our story with those who may not
know it. The signs and symbols are all around us and them. I guarantee that there will
be people with questions in your world. Please read the resurrection story in the
Gospels and remember how much it means to you. If given the opportunity to share it,
then do so with joy.
He is risen! He is risen indeed! Now go tell everyone!
