Are You Done?
Throughout the month of May, we typically celebrate various graduations. Everything
from Pre-K to College and beyond. At each point the student gets to say, “I’m done!” A
finish line has been crossed and a goal achieved. However, for every “I’m done”, there
is what’s next.
It would be ridiculous to graduate and then think that you can put your feet up and relax
and move immediately into retirement mode. We must press on to the next thing.
Spiritually, we are tempted to do just that. We hit a certain spiritual goal and think that
we are done. It might be regular church attendance, completing a special discipleship
program, finally getting our devotional to be a daily routine. We celebrate and feel good
and sometimes think to ourselves, “I’m done”.
Someone told me years ago that spiritual growth is always on an incline and that there
is no place on an incline to stall out. You are either advancing or retreating. The good
news is that life in the Spirit always gets better as we grow forward. The bad news is
that if we think we have reached a plateau, we are probably going in the wrong
direction.
The encouragement for each of us today is to never “Be done” when it comes to our
relationship with God. It really does have depths that we cannot imagine.
