According to the World Health Organization, loneliness is linked to an estimated 100 deaths every hour! Think about that. It is an outrageous statistic. Lonely people exist all around us and churches are sitting mostly empty most of the time. What is wrong with this picture? We are told throughout scripture to be hospitable. It is a basic principle of our faith. And yet, people walk into churches to try and find a place to fit in, only to be treated rudely or not acknowledged at all. I am shocked at the stories I have heard over the years of the simply awful treatment so many have received inside churches. We must do better. We have the gift of life in Jesus, and we can offer that gift initially by just being friendly and welcoming. We never know why someone walks into our place of worship. Imagine if they are one of the lonely people on the verge of giving up. It should not matter what they look like, where they are from, or anything else. “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels…” Hebrews 13:2
